Protection for Bindaree Bush

DEC has agreed to fence the fragile Bindaree Bush Forever Site while a weeding program is undertaken. The fence has discouraged unleashed dogs from entering the area and adding fertilizer which kills native plants and encourages weeds.

The fence has sent a signal that the bush has value and needs to be cared for by the locals. The better the quality of the bush the higher the value of the surrounding properties. It is hoped to sign all the native plants to provide an aid to education for local schools.

Friends of Yellagonga offered to finance a fence to protect this small patch of biodiversity to celebrate 2010 the year of biodiversity.
The dept. of Environment and Conservation refused the offer.
The Friends have not given up and will continue to fight to preserve this last remaining patch of genuine bush in the Lake Goollelal precinct.

This orchid appeared after removal of Veldt grass.

The Joondalup Council has relinquished the lease back to DEC and Friends of Yellagonga can now begin the process of applying to DEC to look after the fragile bush area.

In the meantime most of the pelagonium weed and a high proportion of the wild gladiolus have been removed. It will take another two or three years of effort to remove the last remaining ones.
A specimen of Pterophile linearis ( Pixie Mops) was noted as another species to add to the biodiversity list for Bindaree Bush.
SInce Jill Pryde of DEC did the original list, eight more species have been added.

The 'not so common' catspaw. Found in one small patch of ground in Bindaree Bush clinging to a precarious existance. The last representative of a species in the Lake Goollelal reserve that would have been once very wide spread.

Catspaw are difficult to raise from seed or transplant. My observation is that they prefer nutrient deficient soil, growing best in sandy soil.

This species doesn't occur at the Bindaree Bush site but is represented by a young specimen about 500 metres away and closer to the lake.
A grove of the trees occur on the northeast corner of the Lake Goollelal section.

No longer human shy now that guns have been banned and they are protected by legislation these large attractive birds can be approached by walkers on the lake tracks.

A visitor to Bindaree bush. They attack the banksia and marri trees looking for grubs.

Here is a different species of a thysinotus sp. - low growing and flowering in October. Only a couple of representatives of this species present in Bindaree bush.

Moves to Save Bindaree Bush

It is hoped that in the near future Bindaree Bush will become the sole responsibility of the Department of Conservation and any constraints on turning the area into a refuge for local native plants will be removed.

This area will be ideal for giving students the opportunity to make a contribution to the protection of local species by removing weeds.

Good News for Bindaree Bush.

As the result of a request for funds made to Department of Environment and Conservation Western Australia some partial funding of a project to fence and protect Bindaree Bush has been accepted subject to final approval by the Director.

A list was compiled and showed 74 native plants present in the area.

Unfortunately it also showed a great many weed species.

It is hoped some work can be done on the weed problem as soon as the bush is protected.

I am pleased to report that wheels are in motion to protect the bindaree bush from further slashing. The next step is to protect the bush and put it on the same basis as the many pieces of remnant bushland one sees in the suburbs that are properly fenced. I hope to report progress in this area soon.

Bindaree has a variety of understory plants unique to the Lake Goollelal reserve (see photos) and these are in danger of being lost.

Edge of the bush is slashed as close as machines can reach. Grass trees are isolated . Slashed area is dead. Bush needs to be protected.

Bindaree bush is the area of bush on the corner of Bindaree terrace and Goollelal Drive, Kingsley. It forms part of the Yellagonga Park which is administered by cooperation of Wanneroo and Joondalup councils and the Dept. of Environment and Conservation ( DEC ).

Bindaree Bush at present is the responsibility of Joondalup Council and representations are being made on behalf of FOY ( Friends of Yellagonga community group ) to the Council to protect and conserve this small area of biodiversity. Previous well meaning projects pushing paths through the bush have resulted in loss of bush allowing light to penetrate the canopy and weeds to find an easy route into the area.
The edges are the subject of incursions by annual slashing which further reduces the bush area.
Garden rubbish is dumped in the bush and this often contains vigorous plants which choke the native vegetation.
It is hoped that this small patch of original bush may be used as a seed source for revegetation of rehabilitation areas around Lake Goollelal but first it needs to be protected.

Bindaree Bush is the only remaining area of high biodiversity in the Lake Goollelal surrounds. The Friends of Yellagonga have a request in to the Joondalup Council for it to be fenced as the first step in protection and rehabilitation

Fringed lily - found growing at Bindaree Bush. usually flowers after most of the other flowers have died off towards the end of summer. Fairly wide spread in the undegraded areas.
